Life begins at 80

“I was driven by  pure desire of keeping myself occupied,” says Nirmal Khera who started her modeling and acting career at the age of seventy five.

‘Grow old with grace and guts’ is the new mantra for many in the millennium.  There is no  age- limit to possibilities and so  many are discovering  a ‘new  twenty’ in their fifties

Nirmal Khera, who started her acting and modeling career at the age of seventy five however discovered a ‘new forty’ in her eighties .   Driven by the pure desire of keeping herself constructively occupied , the  spirited lady enrolled herself for a kind of workshop very few would dare to consider  in their  seventies . “On spotting an advertisement in the newspapers , I spontaneously  enrolled for a  voice- modulation workshop as I wished to do the kind of work that would not require me to extend myself on daily basis. ” says the  resident of Andheri who  worked as a purchase manager in the Central Emporium for twelve  years in her  younger  days.

Determined to get  an  assignment after completing the workshop ,the frail lady did not hesitate in knocking the door of a model co-ordinator whose reference she had got from the workshop. “  When I presented my voice –tape , I did not know I would land up acting,” says the soft spoken lady who was thereafter called for an audition for acting instead of  voice-lending.

Not the one to fret over the rejection for voice , she took it up as a challenge and reached to Famous studio for audition all by herself. “ Since I do not consider any work to be bad , I shared my desire to act  with my daughters who were very encouraging,” says the eighty- two year old  who is known by the nick name  ‘Nimmi’ in the Ad- world. “I was quite nervous on my first audition but was relieved for having to say no dialogues,” says the down-to-earth   woman who then was signed for her first Ad film assignment for  ‘Symphony’ air cooler.

Since then there has been no looking back for the lady who got a new leash on life after her daughters got married and husband passed away.  Being on- the –edge- of a new career she  also got a few pictures clicked by her daughter and got them circulated. Thus a series of assignments including ‘Polo mint’ Tata Sky etc.  fell in her lap. For Indusind Bank ATM Ad, she even went for a night shoot. Nano -car shoot again required her to go to Kangada valley nearChandigarhfor two days which did not deter her. “It was worth it as in this Ad my face is flashed maximum number of times.”

Her belief in ‘ Work is Worship’ has been so firm that later she even took up a TV serial by the name ‘Mr & Mrs.Mishra’ that required her to do six day shoot. She also did a cameo in Subhash Ghai’s film ‘Black & white’.

“ Thankfully I have never had to deal with very long dialogues,” says the mentally agile lady who despite her slip- disc problem four years back has not stopped working. As a matter of fact her commitment is so deep that whenever the ‘pick up’ or drop’ by the company is cancelled for some reason at the last moment , she hires a cab and reaches the destination on her own.

Dividing her time between shoots and ‘Satsang’, the spiritually inclined actress has found modeling and acting to be  an enriching experience. “ People treat me with kindness and respect. I also got an insight into the struggle- filled life of so many artists that has made me empathize,”  says the doting grand mother of four  and mother  of three who have only one reservation for this model, which is  ‘ No bikini and no kissing scenes’
